"Neon heart, day-glow eyes, a city lit by fireflies, they're advertising in the skies for people like us...."

The political spectacle last night in Denver was impressive to watch. The spectacle I am talking about was Barack Obama's acceptance speech at the Democratic Party convention. There were 80,000 people at the football field in Denver and it wasn't to see the Bronco's play. Considering the buzz, hype and enthusiasm around Obama it is surprising that he and McCain are so close in the polls. Though not being American or living in America, it is tough to really understand the dynamic. Today, McCain chose Sarah Palin as his vice presidential nominee. Sarah Palin?? I am sure lots of people throughout the world and even in America were doing the same. Palin is the current Governor of Alaska but is relatively inexperienced on the national scene. This move is a bit hypocritical of McCain considering he has been attacking Obama over his lack of experience. As a response to that Obama chose Biden as his VP nominee, a man with a lot of experience. Now what we have is an experience Senator running for President with an inexperienced Governor as his running mate against an inexperienced Senator with an experienced Senator as his running mate. Personally I would like to see Obama in the White House because McCain is a Republican and can't completely escape Bush policies. Most of which he has supported. Though I must say choosing a woman as his VP was a brilliant choice considering how vocal and discouraged Hillary Clinton supporters have been. Now there is a woman on the ballot and it might be enough to get them to switch parties. Intriguing stuff and it should be fascinating to watch unfold.
It is looking more and more like Stephen Harper is going to dissolve Canada's parliament and call for an election October 14. I think he is running scared and with his values very similar to the Republicans in the States, he is worried about what a Democratic government will bring for Canada. More importantly he is worried what message of change will filter north from the U.S. election, so this is a preemptive strike. Hopefully it backfires and the Liberals gain control again. Even if it isn't a majority, perhaps a Liberal-NDP alliance could be enough to save this country.
Well that is enough politics. The following is from Beloved by Toni Morrison, a story set shortly after the U.S. Civil War. The passage follows a conversation between a couple of blacks regarding what the whites have done for them.
"Don't box with me. There's more of us they drowned than there is all of them ever lived from the start of time. Lay down your sword. This ain't a battle; it's a rout."
Well perhaps with a black man as President, the battle will finally be over and all the racial weapons dulled.
I wrote the following today.
Every Moment Escapes In Houdini Style
My expectations are lacklustre
About finding love or its potential
This summer has left me sick
With no memories for winter
A time of unbelievable quiet
Even for someone who likes silence
The light will fade and reflect
When snow arrives and piles up
I remember a day in early December
There had been nothing like it before
More snow than could be measured
With an extended hand or a planted foot
We took pictures and walked about
The scene belonged in a romantic movie
I realized on the following morning
My life seems like an after thought
Every moment escapes in Houdini style
Though my heart lacks any flashy fashion
Each beat follows another without skipping
A stone has more of a exciting life than me
Someone will collect it and keep it safe
Out of the ever changing weather and into a box
One carefully placed in the bottom of a closet
There is no place safer in the world
Especially for a fragile boy in a man’s body
Time has done something strange to me
I wonder what will transpire in the future
Should my heart remain uninspiring and uninspired
How many absent summers can it endure
Before lacklustre turns completely lifeless
With no hope for winter and its quietness
There are no pleas because silence is special
Eventually time will undo what it has done
Should it be what my random fate requires
Anyway I have not been looking for beauty
Now is not the right time or right place
My skin and bones tell me this much
There is yearning and there is the truth of it
I believe in my instincts and their caution
Being right is a real possibility for once
Should all the colours of autumn fall correctly
Given enough days with fading light
The leaves always change like our fortunes
Hopefully for the better and longer.

"There's a piece of Maria in every song I sing...."

Mrs. Potter's Lullaby by Counting Crows
An interesting article about the search for the real Maria, the early muse of Adam Duritz but she hasn't appeared lyrically since the above lullaby.

The weather is horrible, okay, that might be a bit extreme. The change in temperature has given me a summer cold and it is annoying me. Today it is rainy and will not reach 20. The sneezing, running nose and sniffling are not fun. My throat is better today, extra strength halls and tea have help there.
So this blog has become a sparse collection of entries. I get bored of things very easily but such is life. I think I will still post a couple of times a week but really can't think of much to write about. Read the news, read books, listen to music and watch movies. The more you know, the more you can afford to comment on life. Though knowledge isn't everything, it is knowing what to do with it and when to do it. Most of the time silence is better than noise. You will learn and perhaps I will as well.
It is our individualized tastes that matter and not what the masses deem as fit. The only thing they are fit for, is to be tied up and censored.
Canada will most likely be having an election in the early fall and before America, we need to reassert our liberal values and take back control of the government. The less Harper secrecy, the better.
And for most creative artists there is a piece of their muse, real or fictional in every thing they do. It really doesn't matter who they are, or whether they are real, because we are all in the imagination of imagination.

"All the trees are hers and the bees and the furs, not exactly hymns but hers..."

I am still sore from Sunday's softball game. I haven't played much of any baseball in the last couple of years and it feels in my bones now. After getting a bit of the rust off, it felt good and it was a fun day. We had 2 mixed teams of 9 with friends and acquaintances, my team lost. Though it was hardly about that, I really forgot how much I enjoy playing the game.
The weather has moved towards autumn, at least at nights. The sun is setting earlier and the breeze is more chilling than refreshing. By contrast though the days are much nicer and more enjoyable. The give and take of the declining summer.
I wrote the piece below yesterday night after stopping for tea on my way from dinner at my grandparents. I had seen a quote about wisdom and worked off of it.
Knowledge Is Not Wisdom But A Starting Point
Summer’s inevitable descent is upon us
The yellow dragonfly is slowly fading
Many more flowers are already done
Their return is guaranteed unlike ours
Already the August nights are colder
Making camp fires more than necessary
For fighting off the coolness of night
September is a present already opened
I found many reasons to smile yesterday
A few of them remained relevant today
Real laughter is not as foreign to me lately
The reasons are simpler than thought
I made things too complex for years
Choosing to torture myself with doubt
Knowledge is not wisdom but a starting point
Finding my own path can still be achieved
The surface might be rough and not travelled
Should this be the destination of my life
I will not be surprised or even concerned
A place of solitude and peace is my dream
Where its music never leaves the air
The melody is soulful, sweet and soft
Inspirational lyrics fall like dying stars
A wish is only a thought turned reality
Symbolism can only be applied in hindsight
With it we could all be brilliantly right
Thankfully this can never be the case
Stupidity is humanity’s greatest quality
There would not be pure love without it
Our mistakes are plentiful and mournful
Until we eventually learn how to avoid them
A long grieving process of profound loss
Making each laugh louder and more rewarding
Making each smile brighter and longer lasting
There is nothing else to do until death
Our tears will flood this planet one day
Unless our sun burns through us first
Preventing tragedy is never going to happen
All we can do is try to live among it
What we are missing will be held by someone
Should we really need it they will find us
The way our hearts find love after breaking
For like every changing season and life
There is a new one beginning and mattering
Our own should matter throughout it all
A simple lesson not so easy in its learning.

"I've been trying to get down to the heart of the matter but my will gets weak and my thoughts seem to scatter, but I think it's about..forgiveness."

Heart of the Matter by Don Henley
An article from CNN about how to forgive. It might be easy for some of us but for most of us it is more complicated than we can articulate.
http://www.cnn.com/2008/LIVING/personal/08/22/lw.forgiveness/index.html
I started reading an interesting book called Gateway to Oblivion (The Great Lakes' Bermuda Triangle) by Hugh Cochrane. It is an older book, published in 1980, but it is attempting to prove that there is something unexplainable out in these waters. From ships disappearing or suddenly exploding in flames to other events in the air, involving planes crashing and disappearing, also mysterious events on the land surrounding the water. It is interesting and there have been many cases of unexplainable events. Though the author goes out on a limb at times trying to make every event seem more mysterious than it might really be. It is a good companion to my usual collection of serious books.

Anna Begins by Counting Crows (last night in Chicago)
I wrote the following tonight while having tea in Williams, waiting for the daylight to completely fade.
Forgiving Anybody Is Hard For Some
I am a solitary man
The years have made me so
A singular reason does not exist
The multitudes of them equal one
Time will continue to add them up
Until I have lived and died
Measured differently with perspective
Each of us having our own
Based on individual circumstances
Places we have called home and left
Countries spanning the globe
Cultures slightly different or absolutely
There is no denying our biases
Bone holds secrets and skin remembers
A lover, a mother or a stranger
Each with their own comfort level
Forgiving anybody is hard for some
We keep everything tied too tight
Preventing the blood from circulating
Clotting our words and silencing them
Rending us more than useless
When it comes to comforting someone
Their pain is too much our own
Identical in its agonizing composition
A story of fact without fictional characters
Easily remembered faces and mannerisms
Put aside but never completely misplaced
Nothing seems like it can ever really be
I am a keeper of miscellaneous information
Pointless observations about never lasting moments
Colourful sunsets reflected in a woman’s green eyes
The Lily of the Valley lingering on a woman’s skin
Such beautiful thoughts on such an ordinary night
With light fleeting but really nothing else arriving
I would be oblivious to almost anything
Unless it tapped me on the shoulder like a friend
So distant are my introspective meanderings tonight
There is little rhyme and once again no reason
Time will continue and add us all up
After we have lived and died.

So Barack Obama has chosen Joe Biden as his Vice President nominee, I think it is a good solid choice. The ball is in McCain's court now, let the game really begin. Too bad for Obama that they aren't playing basketball.

Come As You Are by Nirvana
Yesterday I watched Definitely, Maybe and although it is sort of a "chick" flick, I enjoyed it. It stars Ryan Reynolds and follows his many loves throughout the early and mid 1990's. The backdrop for the movie is local and national politics in New York state and the Presidency of Bill Clinton. One of Reynolds girlfriends introduces him to Nirvana and Kurt Cobain through the song Come As You Are, thus the blog title. Also in this movie is the brilliant Racheal Weisz and the very cute Abigail Breslin plays Reynolds young daughter. It is her demands to know the story of her father's life before her, which leads to the unfolding of the movie. Information about the movie is below.

High and Dry by Radiohead
So I finally watched The Dark Knight and it was very good as advertised. Ledger's joker is creepy, funny and brilliant. I don't think I should of, but I laughed when he walked out of the hospital dressed as a nurse and blew it up. The Internet Movie Database has it ranked #3 all-time at 9.2/10 only behind The Shawshank Redemption and The Godfather. I think Shawshank is a lot better but only because its story is not based on a superhero but a man jailed for a crime he didn't commit. I don't think it is a coincidence that the great Morgan Freeman is in 2 of the top 3 movies. Information about the Dark Knight is below.

Dream About Me by Moby
I wrote the following early this afternoon.
A Milky White River of Smoothness
Summer has settled into comfortable days
A clear blue sky usually prevails over cloud
There has been adequate breeze to cool us
Should the August sun become too warm
Perfection might be a word used by some
I am more inclined to say it is almost there
My real and perceived flaws make it impossible
Too many pieces of the puzzle are missing
There is a picture but it is not clear enough
I am one of many looking out the same window
Seeing what no woman seems able to see
The potential of them and me in this life
My own possibilities have been buried by me
They are deep in a soul with many holes
Most of them have escaped like time
Unfortunately they are not coming back
I no longer mourn their necessary passing
Freedom comes in varying shapes and faces
Mine is littered with scars of nervous habits
Hers is a milky white river of smoothness
Flowing to a heart disconnected from mine
A peaceful and easy feeling is only a song
I hear occasionally late at night on the radio
Not everything is hard like a mountain boulder
Life has actually become easier with age
Not in the physical or material sense but emotionally
Learning is necessary after failing and disappointing
My lessons are still a large work slowly progressing
The length of an afternoon can hardly be compared
Many more of them will pass casually by me
Until there is some reasoning to their rhyme
I do not expect any large miracles to come along
Singular moments are all of my entitlement
This should be enough for me on most days
Assuming they are not spent searching for a face.

So it is nice to see that former Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien is completely recovered from his heart bypass surgery to verbally abuse Stephen Harper. Someone who can verbally take and receive a punch needs to knock Harper from his high horse and Chretien is someone who can do that. There is no one active in Canadian politics who can play the game better than Chretien. Sleeping dogs only lie still for so long.

"There's things I might have said, only wish I could, now I'm leaking life faster than I'm leaking blood.."

The blogging returns today. I couldn't neglect it any longer.
A friend got married on Saturday and it was a very good day. It was nice to catch up with some old friends and to celebrate new beginnings. The weather was great for it and it has been pretty nice lately. Though yesterday it was a little warm and rained, forcing my weekly visit to my grandparents for dinner indoors.
Below are two pieces of writing, one from earlier and one I wrote yesterday night sitting in Williams.
"Love is a ghost train howling on the radio..."
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3ZW4hkYfsg
The first one was slightly inspired by Ghost Train above.
Life’s Train
Twelve brass bells rang
Life’s train left the station
Fine drops of rain fell
Faces appeared and disappeared
Everyone safely behind glass
I peered down the tracks
Analyzing steel and wood
Before returning home
A place of trinkets and plants
I will be alright alone
There is no one left to disappoint
Life can be easier now
The journey is over
For better or worse
Everyone is gone
My destination has unfolded
Wet skin and dust particles
Commingled in a bathroom
I have run the water hot
Surrounded by steam and sweat
My skin is relaxing
Not young bones are cracking
My mind is alright
Without its heart to correct it
The box was put on the train
Never to be opened again
Things written cannot be undone
Signed, seal and delivered
A song without eyes
Only a voice to sing it
This home will be quieter
Devoid of its inhabitants
I had no choice but to evict them
They had overstayed their welcome
Kindness can only tolerate so much
Until it becomes a form of bitterness
The water runs over porcelain
Transparency seeping through white
An afternoon ringing its passing
Even when ears are not listening
I have not heard anything lately
Coming from where it used to
How quickly years are forgotten
When they mean absolutely nothing.
08/15/08
Refilled and Reinvented
The day has began emptying itself of light
Shortly very little will remain for the night
Electricity has made the moon almost invisible
The fullness of its beauty is hardly recognized
From inside our technologically advanced rooms
Televisions flashing images by the seconds
Love is altered or broken in a text message
Tiny characters of our once prized alphabet
Complex and long words have been shortened
There is not the need for them in this generation
Culturally things are different and maybe easier
Though it is very possible to become disconnected
Friendships are instant messages without real words
Conversation and storytelling skills have been replaced
You can think you know someone but really do not
Their eyes are mysteries behind flashing screens
They are completely different under the moon
When the summer has peaked and September waits
For Carnies to return to their autumn fairs
Prized rides in the memories of our youths
Stuffed animals won, adored and forgotten
The mind freezes their memory for the right moment
When sentimentality is needed to heal our wounds
A grandmother, a park, a flower or a trinket
Small things are what matters most in the end
They will force tears out of our eyes eventually
No one is immune to their formation and release
Human rain and necessary for sustaining life
Without them nothing will grow from our heart
There will be no forgiveness or reconciliation
Everything does not have to remain broken
The light can be refilled after being emptied
The night can be reinvented with moonlight
Real beauty is more than a fancy gadget
Even if it does transmit the world to us
Life’s real stories are going to remain invisible
Until we head out in search of them
Somewhere along the way we will find our own
The result might be hardly recognizable
Because of its beauty in the moonlight.

I have only watched one movie in the past week and it was called Transsiberian. The movie was okay, it starred Ben Kingsley, Woody Harrelson and Emily Mortimer. I like the characters that Kingsley plays, he is so skilled. There is information about the movie below.

I must say Canada's performance at the Olympics is no longer pathetic.

"We went beyond where we should have went..."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmUSJ03TlGM
Sleep Through The Static by Jack Johnson
Below is an article from the New York Times questioning McCain and Obama's commitment to the environment. This is based on the fact that they both failed to show up for a Senate vote offering tax incentives to alternative methods of energy. In my opinion it seems nobody shows up in the Senate or the House of Commons here in Canada when it is their job to do so. It is all smoke and mirrors.
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/13/opinion/13friedman.html?em
More smoke and mirrors coming from China. The revelation yesterday that the anthem singing girl was actually lip syncing because the actual singer wasn't pretty enough to appear on television. PATHETIC.
Today police there arrested and roughed up a British journalist for filming a Pro-Tibet demonstration. PATHETIC, again.
Actually the whole Olympics is PATHETIC, no offense to the athletes but they (the Olympics) went beyond where they were supposed to go. The only highlight of the games is American Michael Phelps and his record setting gold medal haul.
Canada's medal haul, zero. PATHETIC.
More smoke and mirrors coming from Russia. One day after agreeing to a ceasefire, they made further advances into Georgia today. At least, George W. Bush and the U.S. are offering to help Georgia. I wonder what will happen when Russian troops open fire on the Americans. There aren't enough American troops to fight a war in another country. This isn't pathetic, it is DANGEROUS. Putin is DANGEROUS.
I have no idea what this absolute rubbish is but it is a creation of mine. Be what it be.
Dear Old Liza, China and Absolute Rubbish
The rain came down in buckets
Until Dear old Liza washed away
Never did she return to the island
We waited by the shore but nothing
She used to dance and act like a fool
When the rain was falling around her
I guess everyone has their quirks
Things we will remember them by
On summer afternoons of blowing rain
When we cannot see beyond the window
The world has become something foreign
Wars, invasions, riots, boycotts and beheadings
All the news fit to print or televise
Before returning to Olympic coverage
The falsity that sport will change politics
Where a little girl with the voice of an angel
Cannot appear on television because she is not pretty
There are no human rights advancement in this
China is just an illusion for the world to see
The reality is something uglier and more real
Perception has become a clever rhyme for deception
We have all been fooled before and will again
Dear old Liza washed away with the rain
Leaving behind a holey and plastic bucket
No one has dared moved from its spot
Legends, curses and absolutely rubbish
Becomes hard to ignore after a while
Everyday folks surely cannot all be crazy
I watch the rain but do not need a bucket
All my gathering is done in my memory
You were beautiful and still might be
Should there be a picture for me to see
After more time has passed by and dried up
Much like the rain has on this summer afternoon
Leaving behind nothing definite but something vague.

Below are Counting Crows clips from last night in Saratoga New York. They played every song from August and Everything After in order starting at Round Here and ending with A Murder Of One. Adam said it was tribute to Isaac Hayes who died on the weekend. Too bad all the clips aren't on Youtube, but what is, is good.

"Oh surrender is much sweeter, when we both let it go, let the water wash our bodies clean and love wash our souls..."

Raining On Sunday by Keith Urban
It has been another day of on and off rain. Though it is rather cool, I don't think it reached 20. Right now, the sun is out and it might even be a nice sunset.
Since the weather was crappy, I watched a couple of movies. The first one was Next with Nicholas Cage, Julianne Moore and the beautiful Jessica Beil. It was okay, though not entirely believable and because Cage's character knew what was going to happen before it happened, it gave up the element of surprise. Information about the movie is below.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0435705/
The second one was Married Life with the brilliant Chris Cooper, Pierce Brosnan, Patricia Clarkson and the beautiful Rachael McAdams. This movie was better and had a much more clever plot. I really enjoy Cooper's characters and his ability to fit comfortably into them. This was also a very different role for Brosnan, with no action scenes at all. Not a movie for everyone but good acting. Information about the movie follows.

I wrote this about an hour ago.
Long Sunday Afternoons
We used to read the same books
Passing them along like trays of food
Appetizers for our minds stimulation
Mutual starting points in conversations
Before they evolved into something else
During those long Sunday afternoons
Where weather was never discussed
Barely appearing on our talking menu
Too many other things took precedence
These days this would not be the case
We would discuss the rain and its abundance
The feeling that early August was late October
There could be no comfortable silences
Awkwardness would take the floor and speak
A loud preacher without a script but a pulpit
We could not get away from him quietly
I suppose this is the price of failed friendship
No wonder they are left dead by the living
The damage can be undone but not easily
Humans have become accustomed to receiving
Giving and loving back is not as familiar
So we ignore, move on and let go
Regretting everything but admitting nothing
Pocket aces broke by a pair of two’s
Sport advancing despite human rights abuse
Hypocrites out for a walk looking for money
Hoping not to find peace and harmony
I think I will be better come this September
When my mind can explore nature’s changes
Idleness has never been a problem like boredom
Certain endeavours will occupy my mind
Where our conversations used to roam freely
I paid a steep price for their freedom
You were never faced with my burdens
They own a room in my uncertain consciousness
Where they argue between friendship or nothing
There cannot be anymore blurring of the two
Next time a conversation moves beyond the weather.

I believe the recently started war in Georgia is Russia's attempt to gain back its former land and is only the first step towards gaining back all of its former land. The country knows the world and in particular the United States is stretched militarily thin and will not be able to do much about it. Vladimir Putin might not be President but as Prime Minister he is pulling the strings of the government because like all megalomaniacs he craves power. He has been and will always be a dangerous man, which makes Russia equally as dangerous and especially against a lame duck United States.

Walnut Tree by Keane
On this date Twenty years ago, Wayne Gretzky was traded (sold) to the Los Angeles Kings. This move paved the way for further expansion to the southern United States. Though the Kings never won a Stanley Cup and only reached the finals once, hockey began to thrive in non-traditional markets. 5 teams that didn't exist in 1988 have won the Stanley Cup between now and then. They are Colorado, Dallas, Tampa Bay, Carolina and Anaheim. Of course, this isn't all because Gretzky went to Los Angeles, but the creation of those teams was very much influenced by his presence in Los Angeles. Gretzky proved that hockey couple be big in warm climates, and though it has never passed the NFL, NBA or MLB, it is viable, in most of these markets. Though in my opinion the expansion has gone too far and there are too many teams in markets that can't support hockey and not enough teams in Canada. It would have been nice to see how many Stanley Cups the Oilers could have won had they kept Gretzky but such vision is impossible.
It has rained on and off here for most of the day. Around 5 the downtown skies got as black as I have seen them in some time. The storm exploded shortly after and it has been wet since. I didn't do a whole lot today, went out for tea, wrote the piece below and got my haircut.
Breeding Gloominess
This Saturday afternoon has nearly passed
A summer rain fell and gathered in puddles
Occasionally pale sunlight broke free of cloud
Bringing light to the uninspired proceedings
I am struggling to create anything of value
Dullness looks like it might rule the evening
Even beautiful women and their summer skin
Do not seem to be able to arouse interest
The gloominess breeds under plastic lights
Where I sit waiting for a pair of elusive eyes
Surely a colour more intense than my own
They have faded over the past couple of years
Vaguely worth remembering for anything good
More often negatives outweigh positives
Just a trip around life’s merry carrousel ride
There are not enough smiles but fewer tears
I have trapped everything under scarred skin
Plenty of my poems say more than enough
The skies have darkened like wet black hair
A storm is planning on exploding over dinner
Lightning flashes but its thunder is silent
Music plays in my ears and people scramble
Hurrying to make it where they are going
I am not one of them and hurrying is not me
My slowness is intentional and with purpose
One day a destination will clearly emerge
The house along the coast of windy Scotland
With a view of endless water and its waves
A dream arriving like clockwork each night
I no longer suppress it or my sleepy happiness
Her dress is a hand threaded green colour
Darker than her light orange and curled hair
Carefully covering her pale and healthy skin
White like the winter snow here in Canada
The eyes and face are constantly evolving
A complex puzzle of DNA, skin and bone
Something I know very little about like love
Beauty trumps even the darkest of storms
Her smile crept across the room to my mouth
Where it lingered, formed and disappeared
At least its presence was noticed for a moment
Making the breeding gloominess less productive.

The Weight by The Band
08/08/08
I am sure there will be much made of the significance of today's date. Just another day.
Today I watched 1408, it was sort of creepy. Though I found the plot rather flawed and didn't like the ending. I am a fan of John Cusack but most of the movie is just him on screen. Few actors can hold our attention by themselves for extended periods of time, they should have used Samuel L. Jackson better because the screens between them were good. Anyway there is a link below providing information about the movie.

John Edwards gave the impression of the squeaky clean politician who had lost a son and is dealing with his wife's cancer. But like all politicians and all men he too is flawed.

Since I finished A Painted House yesterday, I had to find a new book to read today. There was this book called The Cobra Event by Richard Preston in the bottom of my closet, not sure how it got there or where it came from, but I haven't read it, so I guess I will. The following is from it.
"It is essentially impossible to completely exterminate a population with a biological weapon. On the other hand, it is quite easy to crash a population, reducing it by half or more in a few days."
Enjoy the weekend.

Eleanor Put Your Boots On by Franz Ferdinand
Very breezy and a little cooler then is usual for early August. I am loving it. The day, following the early afternoon downpour of rain, has just seemed very peaceful. I was out and did some reading, while relaxing with a huge cup of green tea.
I would love to live in this house and be in my own world. Well my own physical world, unlike my current own mental world.

Today I finished reading A Painted House by John Grishman and actually enjoyed it. I liked Luke's seven year old perception of the people around him and 1952 life in rural Arkansas. Plus his love of baseball and its many references in the book.

Bird Stealing Bread by Iron and Wine
I also did some writing this afternoon and the results are below.
Not Everything Reads Like A Screenplay
The day is cool for early August
A downpour of rain came around noon
Quickly being replaced by sunlight
Now shortly after three it is breezy
The girl had the saddest summer eyes
Mine might look the same to another
People are reflected in office windows
Their walking bodies contorted oddly
I am a silent observer on this Thursday
Unwilling to confess beyond these words
The birds swoop done to gather up food
Bringing to mind an Iron and Wine song
Very little does not remind me of music
I suppose it is one of my few comforts
A wool sweater on a cold winter day
They are only months away from returning
Shortly after our final harvesting of crops
The food that sustains us through hibernation
Sleep is hardly a comfort to my thoughts
A feeling of tiredness never really expels
Occasionally peace returns contently like a smile
There is no predicting these rare moments
As a child they would seem completely normal
Flowers in a vase on a wooden kitchen table
Augmented by a variety of fruits varying in colour
The Ferris wheel will be spinning again before long
Our summer skin will start to chill at night
Long before September has become October
Her sad eyes might find some happiness
I suppose there are a lot of possibilities
Should we sit down and really think about them
Not everything reads like a screenplay
Hearts do not always overcome their breaking
Some heal and they become stronger than before
Others remain fragile like me and mine
Eleanor you can take your boots off
I am done following your footsteps around
There does not seem to be any love left
Spring bloomed what it could but summer ruined it
Choices were made and plans broken
The breeze tells me it is going to be okay
A faint whisper coming from the future
Reminding me it is out there somewhere
How fortunate this is for all of us
On a Thursday in early August.

Same Mistake by James Blunt
The Olympics should not be in China. The games are not about sport, they are about everything else. Whether it is politics, terrorism or human rights, something will over shadow any individual sporting achievement. I feel sorry for the athletes, because their once in a lifetime chance is going to be overshadowed by a substance greater than the great wall of China smog. Personally I could care less about the Olympics, I am sure I will watch some of it but I am not alone in my lack of enthusiasm for it. By going to China the Olympics have shamed themselves, they obviously didn't learn any lessons from going to Moscow. Olympic games cannot change cultures, they can alter lives and perhaps stimulate economies for a short period of time but in the end politics will win the bigger gold medal. China and the Olympic committee can put up their own smog but after the Olympics leave China will still be its controversial self.

Miller's Angels by Counting Crows (Too bad I can't find a link to the song)
The beautiful thing about the Internet is its abundance of "free" music. It makes collecting and listening to live bootlegs of your favourite band very easy. I naturally do this with Counting Crows. There seems to be no shortage of their performances and late last week they themselves launched http://livecountingcrows.com/, a website with soundboard recordings of their concerts. These concerts can be purchased and initially there was a free concert for the first 10,000 fans who signed up, which I was one of. It is a good show with a unique set list.
Yesterday I was listening to another show from November 1995, prior to the recording of Recovering The Satellites and it contains raw songs that would and wouldn't end up on RTS. The show from the Hollywood Grand in Los Angeles is impressive for Margery Dreams Of Horses (unreleased), Chelsea (hidden track, rarely played live), Suffocate and Good Luck (unreleased) but the highlight for me is the very raw version of Miller's Angels. The album version sounds pretty raw but this is even more so. The song which is rarely played is beautiful and depressing. It isn't a concert song, but it is a song I would want to hear at a concert. Which is what makes me a real fan. After the concert ended, I started listening to random songs from my iTunes player and immediately Miller's Angels came on. So when I sat down to write under the limited star sky last night, it influenced my writing.
The Living Dead Cannot Be Haunted
There are a few scatter stars tonight
The moon is low and reddish
Summer nears its symbolic zenith
We are in the dog days of August
Where it is hot, humid and overcast
I am waiting for the colours of September
The weather making women more beautiful
With voices like Jewel and faces like Natalie
Imagining is my dreaming unlike sleeping
Where tossing and turning are common
The normality of this silence is not shocking
I have come to expect nothing less or more
Voices are only ghosts of a distant past
There is little for them here with me now
The living dead cannot be haunted
We are already scared and ready to die
Unfortunately or fortunately our time waits
For what the moon does not answer
Our questions are too many anyway
All the good answers have been spoken
There are no angels coming out of the blue sky
Whenever those skies are returned to us
After Romeo and Juliet have finished
What began with Miller and his angels
Even Samson and Delilah’s love was flawed
There is nothing that is not with time
I am as much indebt to it as anyone
Though it is unlikely it will be paid back
The enormity of my waste is too vast
A life should be used for living and trying
There is some honour in this type of failing
I am a disgraced soldier in humanity’s army
A coward of the heart and a thief of the mind
My love, my ideas, my words and my life
They are only fragments of somebody’s imagination.

Rain King by Counting Crows (August 5 Hersey PA)
Today I watched The Last Castle, a movie from 2001, starring Robert Redford, James Gandolfini and Mark Ruffalo. It was an alright movie with a little suspense, some action and some good acting. Though nothing spectacular, it passed a couple of hours. Redford plays a disgraced General sent to prison, Gandolfini is the "murderous" warden and Ruffalo one of the other inmates. The power struggle between Redford and Gandolfini is the focal point of the movie because there can only be one king of the castle. There is a link below to information about the movie.

Cry by James Blunt
The following is from A Painted House by John Grisham.
"As we left town I thought about the end of the season. Baseball began in the spring, when we planted and when hope were high. It sustained us through the summer, often our only diversion from the drudgery of the fields. We listened to each game, then talked about the plays and the players and the strategies until we listened to the next one. It was very much a part of our daily lives for six months, then it was gone. Just like the cotton.
I was sad by the time we arrived home. No games to listen to on the front porch. Six months without the voice of Harry Caray. Six months with no Stan Musial. I got my glove and went for a long walk down a field road, tossing the ball in the air, wondering what I would do until April.
For the first time in my life, baseball broke my heart."
Anything we love will eventually break our heart, it will leave and if we are lucky it will return. Though in most cases, memories of love, heroes and our youth will be all that remains.

"Gonna close my eyes, girl and watch you go, running through this life darling like a field of snow..."

On Sunday Atlanta Braves announcer Skip Caray died at 68. Skip was the voice of the Braves for over 30 years, first on radio and then on TBS. It was TBS that brought Atlanta Braves baseball into the homes of hundreds of thousands throughout Canada and millions throughout America. Though not a Braves fan, I am a baseball fan, so I often found myself watching their games on TBS and listening to Skip describe the broadcast. It was for me much the way it was with his father, the Cubs and WGN. These 2 "super" stations brought not only the game of baseball into our Canadian homes but these 2 legendary broadcasters. For as flamboyant and funny as Harry was (just look at his picture in the article below) Skip was laid back and sarcastic. His humour was a great part of the game, because in the game of baseball there is a lot of downtime. If the game was boring Harry would try and make it sound exciting whereas Skip would tell you it was boring and make sarcastic comments regarding it. I enjoyed Skip's honest assessment of the game. Below is a short article regarding his death from the Los Angeles Times, linked mostly for its picture showing Harry, Skip and his son Chip who is also a Braves announcer.

The book I am reading, A Painted House by John Grisham is set in the cotton fields of Arkansas and is told by 7 year old Luke. Luke during the long days of cotton picking dreams of playing for the St. Louis Cardinals and hitting the ball like his idol Stan Musil. There are many mentions of Harry Caray throughout the book, because he was the radio voice of the Cardinals during this time period. Luke and his family spent many summer nights on the porch listening to Harry's voice describe the game of baseball. The importance of the broadcaster is not as important today in the age of television, they can always be muted. Which might explain why good announcers are not as abundant as they used to. As a fan of the Blue Jays we are stuck with the young and often amazed Jamie Campbell for games on Sportsnet. Whereas on TSN we get the more seasoned and often more critical Rod Black. On CBC we get the best of them all Jim Hughson, but not often enough. The best Blue Jay announcer ever, Dan Shulman, left us many years ago to work for ESPN, at least the Americans have him.
The following is a passage from A Painted House, encompassing Luke's thoughts, Harry Caray, Stan Musil and The Cardinals.
"The last of the clouds were gone by dark, but the heat did not return. We sat on the porch after supper and waited for the Cardinals. The air was clear and light--the first hint of autumn.
Six games were left, three against the Reds and three against the Cubs, all to be played at home at Sportsman's Park, but with the Dodgers seven games in first place, the season was over. Stan the Man Musial was leading the league in batting and slugging, and he also had more hits and doubles than anybody else. The Cardinals would not win the pennant, but we still had the greatest player in the game. At home after a road trip to Chicago, the boys were happy to be back in St. Louis, according to Harry Caray, who often passed along greetings and gossip as if all the players lived in his house.
Musial hit a single and a triple, and the score was tied at three after nine innings. It was late, but we weren't tired. The storm had chased us from fields, and the cool weather was something to be savored. The Spruills were sitting around a fire, talking softly and enjoying a moment without Hank. He often disappeared after supper.
In the bottom of the tenth, Red Schoendienst singled, and when Stan Musial came to the plate, the fans went wild, according to Harry Caray, who, as Pappy said, often watched one game and described another. The attendance was fewer than ten thousand; we could tell the crowd was slim. But Harry was making enough noise for the other twenty thousand. After 148 games, he was just as excited as he'd been on opening day. Musial ripped a double, his third hit of the game, scoring Schoendienst and winning it four to three."
Over the weekend I watched Reservation Road. It is a movie starring Joaquin Phoenix, Jennifer Connelly and Mark Ruffalo. Phoenix and Connelly lose their son in a hit and run and the guilty party is closer than they know. There isn't much to the story, it is pretty much obvious who did it but what isn't obvious is what is going to be done about it. The acting is very good and the moral questions are many. There is a link to information about the movie below.

Oh You Delicate Heart by Hawksley Workman (for a friend)
We had a beautiful thunderstorm late last night and again early this morning. The one last night was nice to watch, it was very intense, hard rain, lots of lightning and thunder. I was in bed but I don't think sleeping really well when the other one came around 2AM but it sounded equally as intense.
I promised to link some happy news. Here are few "happy" news stories.

Okay well that really wasn't much, check out the website for yourself. There really aren't that many feel good stories out there. Perhaps we have lost the art of being happy.

Fragile Happiness by Super Furry Animals
Maybe happiness is just fragile and needs to be appreciated more when it is abundant.
Today I finished reading The Fire-Dwellers by Margaret Laurence. It was an okay book, written almost 40 years ago and from a female perspective. My mother thought I liked John Grisham, so she gave me a book to read by him that she had borrowed from a friend of hers. I don't dislike his work, just really haven't got into it, but I will read A Painted House because it is here and it something new to read.
I wrote the following this afternoon, basically it is about how inept we all are at trying to comfort someone with a broken heart.
Ineptness
A summer thunderstorm came over night
Leaving this August day feeling like Autumn
The skies are overcast and it is windy
I am trying to make sense of anything
So much does not seem right or fair
We all suffer from ineptness
When trying to comfort someone
After their heart has been broken
By human nature or unintended cruelty
Perhaps this is precisely what humanity is
I do not have this answer or many
Words come but seem rather inadequate
Though they get written and read
Kindness should always be attempted
No matter how often we fail at it
Perhaps success occurs more than we know
Gratitude is a friend unable to speak
There are too many words anyway
They are constantly adding them each year
I do not think we use what we have
Different words meaning the same thing
Rarely do conversations not include slang
Worse is the language of the text messages
Love might not be dead but romance is
Buried by overpriced underwhelming gifts
I cannot wait to bury this summer
Symbolically by turning the calendar to September
A month of changing colours and new faces
Though what is here remains here
Whether for the good or the bad
Only our inner self can really know for sure
We have to know because no one else does
They are completely inept as we are
When it comes to solving heart break
Providing answers to questions out of our realm
I dreamed of an imaginary planet
With simpler creatures and simpler lives
Not utopia but as close as possible
Then I realized it was all in my head
Living is only as hard as we make it.

August and Everything After by Counting Crows
Above is a live clip of the unreleased title track from Counting Crows first album, August and Everything After. It has only been played live once, and most of the recording is above with just Adam at the piano. The lyrics are tremendously strong and a studio version would be nice one day. Also today is Adam Duritz's birthday, Happy 44th Birthday.
Last night I watched Street Kings, which stars Keanu Reeves, Forest Whitaker and Hugh Laurie. I liked it for what it was, a cop drama with some good action scenes and plot twists. Reeves is pretty good for him and Whitaker is his usual strong presence. There is a link to information about the movie below.
